Work package wave

Summary

Subaqueous slope failure and delta collapse may generate tsunami-like waves which pose a hazard to settlements and infrastructure on the lakeshore. WPwave aims to understand governing mechanisms related to the generation, the propagation, and the runup of these waves. The main focus is on the following questions:

  • What controls wave generation and propagation in a narrow and confined lake basin?
  • How do different delta collapse mechanisms affect the size of tsunamis? ?
  • Which models allow for a sufficiently detailed and efficient prediction of runup heights and inundation depths?

Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations are applied to answer these questions. The experiments allow for a better insight into the underlying physical processes and act as a benchmark for computer models. Numerical modelling is required to compute tsunami scenarios for entire lakes at prototype scale and will form an integral part of the probabilistic hazard assessment framework of the overall process chain.
